Asbestos Information

There are specific requirements how asbestos should be managed during removal as determined by the Queensland Government.

Asbestos Removal Licensing

It is best to seek out a licensed asbestos removal professional to perform any asbestos removal work. There are different types of asbestos and some types are more dangerous than others.

Licensed asbestos removalists have to follow strict guidelines to ensure the safety of themselves and the community.

In some instances air monitoring will be required for asbestos removal. Air monitoring is airborne asbestos fibre sampling that assesses exposures and effectiveness of control measures.

DIY Asbestos Removal

Home owners can remove up to 10 square metres of non-friable (bonded) asbestos without any certification, however they still need to follow safe work procedures and safety precautions to minimise the risk to themselves and those around them.

If a home owner wishes to remove more than 10 square metres then they must hold a certificate obtained under arrangements approved or established by Queensland Health. We encourage home owners to perform research on asbestos removal before considering the DIY approach.

Dangers of Asbestos

When airborne, asbestos fibres can be extremely harmful to humans. The fibres can enter the body through inhalation. Once the fibres enter the body they can become trapped in the lungs, potentially causing serious diseases such as cancer and other debilitating illnesses.

Exposure to asbestos fibres increases the chance of developing cancer of the lung, ovaries and larynx, as well as mesothelioma.

If left untouched, asbestos can provide little health risk to humans. When asbestos is disturbed the fibers become airborne and this creates the main risk of inhalation.

Is asbestos common in Brisbane, Gold Coast & Ipswich

The short answer is Yes. Asbestos was commonly used in the construction industry right up until around 1990.

If your home was constructed prior to 1990 then there’s a high chance it contains some form of asbestos material.

Throughout the 1980’s asbestos use began to decline as the health risks became more commonly known. Asbestos was still commonly used in bathrooms, eaves and other parts of houses where it’s value as a waterproof and heatproof sheeting was beneficial.

Some asbestos is very easy to spot. Asbestos roofing and fencing has a unique appearance, usually a wave style. Asbestos fencing can also contaminate the surrounding soil as the fibers settle in the soil over the years and during removal. Other asbestos is not so obvious, for example some vinyl floor tiles can contain asbestos. It is important to get any suspicious material tested prior to removing it so you know what you are dealing with.
